Hydrilla is an invasive plant that thrives in Florida waters because of the warm weather. Hydrilla can spread very quickly, and in the summertime it can grow up to and inch an hour. Hydrilla is often treated with chemicals but fisherman don't approve of that becuase it kills some of the best fish habitat around.
Floating vegetation creates a whole environment under the "mat" that the plants create. Fisherman "punch" through this cover with a heavy weight to get to the bottom and hopefully catch any fish living under the mats.
